The Department of Education and Knowledge of Abu Dhabi (ADEK) was established in September 2017 by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. As part of its mission, ADEK looks to build an attractive education environment to make Abu Dhabi a pioneer regional and International Education Hub.
ADEK initiated the project with a number of major regional operators, amongst them Bloom Charter Schools to identify the challenges faced with their previous Learning Management System (LMS). To help them with the task of finding a robust, modern, easy-to-use, and scalable LMS, they consulted Creative Technology Solutions (CTS), Instructure’s reseller in the UAE.
Established in 2013 out of the need to provide a unique and compelling IT solution to the education sector in the Middle East, CTS has helped over seventy schools implement solutions. These range from the Learning Management Systems to be used for formative assessment, all the way to a complete Flipped Classroom with a 1-to-1 learning using an education tablet with each student. CTS approach is tailored to the school's individual e-learning needs, implementing suitable technological solutions and ensuring that the users (students, teachers, parents & staff) are using the solution.
Key Insights
ADEK has initiated the standardisation of Canvas usage in one of the most highly-ranked education systems in the country through three key operators Bloom Charter Schools, making innovative learning and teaching experiences scalable.
Since 2021, CTS has successfully implemented Canvas LMS in 12 schools, impacting a network of over 15,000 students and teachers in Abu Dhabi. With Canvas, the operators have created educational videos for parents in Arabic and English, incrementing parent participation in the learning process.
Schools have stated that by using Canvas the teachers could work together, which has brought a sense of togetherness and collaboration.
The schools participating have been able to have structural consistency in building courses and setting up online or hybrid learning.
Canvas has helped them to have more consistent grading processes and grading practices to increase teachers' capacity for differentiation and set up opportunities for students to have their intervention needs to be met.

Implementing an LMS is complex. For this project, there were several stakeholders involved.
